What is a Man? part 1

One of the most confusing and misunderstood social and academic definitions is the definition of a man. Even though thousands of books exist discussing this subject, most still miss the mark.

Once we’re clear on what a man is by accurately defining the term, we can identify what he does and his general purpose and function in society.

For years, I searched for the answer to this question.

Ask anyone today, “What is a man?” You’re guaranteed to get a different answer from each person.

The reasoning for this is basic. Since an explanation that cuts across cultural divides doesn’t exist, writers must develop one of their own.

“You got to be a man before you can be anything. You got to be a man of principles, character, and integrity.”
-Mel Taylor

Each book written on this subject applies a different philosophy and rationale according to the writer’s experiences and worldviews, which fosters confusion and leaves the reader with more questions than answers.

For years, I’ve searched for the answer to this question, which I address in this article.

I’ve read many works, watched countless videos, and queried multiple men to define a man.

The need to define the word “man” presented itself as a problem that needed a solution, and I was challenged to take on the task.

I used the knowledge of my studies, my experience, and the experience of others to define a man.

My definition is as follows:

“A Man is a masculine, adult, biological male who has successfully transitioned

from the state of boyhood
to that of manhood.”
-Romalis Batiste

If being a man was easy, every boy would become one.
